Slovak Arachnological Society

The main purpose of our conferences is to promote our young colleagues and networking of people interested in arachnology and acarology. Arachnological Conference (untill 2009 as the Conference of the Slovak arachnologists) is a dynamic three-day event not only for researchers, where our work and experiences are presented and discussed. Since 2004, our events held in campground of the Institute of Landscape Ecology SAS in Východná. For many young arachnogists our Arachnological Conference stays in memory as the place, where they presented their research for the first time in their lives. Friendly, almost familiar tone is one of the reasons why this event became very popular.

In 1999, Arachnological Section of the Slovak Entomological Society co-organized European Colloquium of Arachnology in High Tatras, for the first time in Slovakia.

Members of Arachnological Section participated in regular field excursions organized by the Slovak Entomological Society. These excursions called "Entomological Days" had a long tradition and for many young rookies in entomology (and also in arachnology) they were an unique opportunity to connecting people and to adopt the field experiences and skills from older colleagues.

Since 1997 the Arachnological Section SES started to organize its own field excursions called "Arachnological Days" for all members of the Slovak Entomological Society. Arachnological Days was primarily focused into areas, where arachnid's fauna was investigated insufficiently untill then. Thanks to correct relationships and co-operation with State Nature Conservancy of the Slovak Republic we explore many attractive areas of Slovakia. This co-operation flow into publication of two books – Arachnids of the Poloniny National Park (Arachnida: Araneae, Pseudoscorpiones, Opiliones, Acari – Parasitiformes) in 2003 and Arachnids of the Cerová vrchovina Highland (Arachnida: Araneae, Pseudoscorpiones, Opiliones, Acari) in 2009. On the present we are working on the third book, from Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area...

Under the leadership of Prof. Buchar, thirty-one arachnological excursions have been organised between 1972 and the end of the federal activity of the Arachnological Section of the Slovak Entomological Society. Their results have contributed importantly to our knowledge of the arachnofauna of the Czech and Slovak Republics.

On the territory of Slovakia 11 excursions were realized: Turčianska kotlina, Malá and Veľká Fatra (1974), Slovenský kras (1975), Východoslovenská nížina (1976), Považské podolie (1978), Východoslovenská nížina (1981), Podunajská rovina (1985), Malá Fatra (1987), Cerová vrchovina (1990), Zemplínske vrchy (1991), Východoslovenská nížina (1992) and Ponitrie – Zoborské vrchy (1992). But only two of them were organized directly by Slovak arachnologists: Turiec (1974) and Cerová vrchovina (1990). After the end of Czechoslovakia, Slovak arachnologists organized one more "federal" excursion in 1995 (Biele Karpaty).

Later, arachnological excursions were organized only within the programme of Arachnological Conferences in Východná. Since 2013 the tradition of irregular arachnological excursions was renewed under the name "Field Arachnoexcursion".
